Mounjaro

Is Mounjaro effective for weight loss? Price, results, and things to know.
Mounjaro is an injectable medicine containing tirzepatide, which activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors involved in appetite, fullness, blood glucose regulation and food intake. For eligible patients, it may be considered as part of a medically supervised weight-management plan.
Insight Guide About Mounjaro

What Is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name of a medicine containing tirzepatide, a single molecule that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors.

Tirzepatide is not a mixture of two hormones. It is one medicine designed to act on both receptor pathways.

These pathways are involved in:

  • Appetite regulation
  • Feelings of fullness
  • Blood glucose regulation
  • Glucose-dependent insulin secretion
  • Food intake
  • Gastric emptying during certain stages of treatment

Mounjaro does not directly burn or dissolve body fat. Weight-management treatment should therefore be supported by appropriate nutrition, physical activity, sleep and preservation of muscle mass.

How Does Mounjaro Support Weight Loss?

Mounjaro may help some people feel less hungry, become full sooner and find it easier to control portion sizes, which can support a reduction in overall calorie intake.

Tirzepatide can also slow gastric emptying, particularly when treatment is started or the dose is increased.

Some patients may therefore notice:

  • Reduced appetite
  • Earlier fullness
  • Longer-lasting fullness
  • Smaller portion sizes
  • Reduced interest in certain foods

However, having almost no appetite is not necessarily a sign of better treatment.

Eating too little may result in inadequate protein, fluid and nutrient intake. Medical follow-up should therefore assess more than body weight alone.

Other factors worth monitoring include:

  • Waist circumference
  • Protein and food intake
  • Muscle mass
  • Physical activity
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Hydration
  • Other side effects
  • Ability to maintain healthy habits over time

How Much Weight Can You Lose With Mounjaro?

In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, participants receiving tirzepatide lost an average of approximately 15.0% to 20.9% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks, depending on dose and individual response.

Study groupAverage body-weight change at 72 weeks
Tirzepatide 5 mgApproximately 15.0% reduction
Tirzepatide 10 mgApproximately 19.5% reduction
Tirzepatide 15 mgApproximately 20.9% reduction
PlaceboApproximately 3.1% reduction

Participants in all study groups also received lifestyle guidance involving diet and physical activity.

These numbers are clinical-trial averages, not guaranteed results.

Actual weight change may be higher, lower or different from the study average depending on starting weight, health conditions, tolerated dose, treatment duration, diet, activity and side effects.

Mounjaro vs Semaglutide: What Did the Head-to-Head Study Find?

SURMOUNT-5 directly compared tirzepatide with semaglutide in adults with obesity or overweight who did not have type 2 diabetes. At 72 weeks, average body-weight reduction was approximately 20.2% with tirzepatide compared with 13.7% with semaglutide.

Because SURMOUNT-5 was a head-to-head trial, it provides a more direct comparison than comparing results from unrelated studies.

However, these findings do not mean tirzepatide is automatically the better medicine for every patient.

The choice of treatment should also consider:

  • Approved indication
  • Medical history
  • Other medicines
  • Side effects
  • Tolerability
  • Treatment goals
  • Cost
  • Long-term sustainability

How Much Weight Can You Lose on Mounjaro in One Month?

There is no standard number of kilograms that everyone should lose during the first month of Mounjaro treatment.

The beginning of treatment is often focused on assessing tolerability and individual response rather than achieving the maximum possible weight reduction.

First-month weight change may depend on:

  • Starting body weight
  • Prescribed dose
  • Food intake
  • Physical activity
  • Fluid and glycogen changes
  • Medical conditions
  • Other medicines
  • Side effects

It would therefore be misleading to divide a 72-week clinical-trial result by the number of months and use that as a monthly target.

Weight loss does not usually occur at a constant rate throughout treatment.

What Mounjaro Strengths Are Available?

Mounjaro is available in strengths ranging from 2.5 mg to 15 mg.

Available strengths include:

  • Mounjaro 2.5 mg
  • Mounjaro 5 mg
  • Mounjaro 7.5 mg
  • Mounjaro 10 mg
  • Mounjaro 12.5 mg
  • Mounjaro 15 mg

Different strengths allow doctors to adjust treatment according to response and tolerability.

Patients should not choose a strength based on body weight, the number of kilograms they want to lose or another person’s treatment experience.

A higher dose is not automatically more appropriate.

How Much Does Mounjaro Cost?

Mounjaro prices at Smooth Clinic range from THB 12,900 to THB 26,500, depending on strength from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. The appropriate strength should be determined by a doctor rather than selected according to price.

Mounjaro strengthPrice

Mounjaro 5 mgTHB 14,900
Mounjaro 7.5 mgTHB 17,900

Please confirm with the clinic whether the listed price refers to a KwikPen, box or treatment package, and whether doctor consultation, additional testing, supplies or follow-up are included.

Prices and product availability may change. Current information should be confirmed before booking or travelling to the clinic.

A higher-priced strength does not mean it will provide better results for every patient.

Who May Be Suitable for Mounjaro?

Mounjaro may be considered for adults with obesity or for adults who are overweight and have a related health condition, following an individual medical assessment.

Common weight-management criteria include:

  • BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or
  • BMI of 27 to below 30 kg/m² with at least one weight-related health condition

Examples of weight-related conditions may include:

  • Hypertension
  • Dyslipidaemia
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Prediabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes

BMI is only one part of the medical assessment.

A doctor may also review:

  • Weight history
  • Blood glucose
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Gastrointestinal conditions
  • Kidney health
  • Pancreatic or gallbladder history
  • Current medicines
  • Pregnancy or plans for pregnancy

Meeting a BMI threshold does not automatically mean that Mounjaro is appropriate.

Can People Without Diabetes Use Mounjaro for Weight Management?

People without diabetes may be considered for tirzepatide-based weight management when they meet relevant medical criteria and a doctor determines that the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Both SURMOUNT-1 and SURMOUNT-5 studied tirzepatide in adults with obesity or overweight who did not have type 2 diabetes.

However, not having diabetes does not mean that anyone can start treatment.

Someone with a normal BMI who wants to lose a small amount of weight for cosmetic reasons may not match the populations studied in major obesity trials and may not be an appropriate candidate for medication.

What Are the Side Effects of Mounjaro?

The most common Mounjaro side effects involve the gastrointestinal system and may be more noticeable when treatment begins or after the dose is increased.

Common Side Effects

Possible symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Early fullness
  • Reduced appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Indigestion or belching

Symptoms may improve as the body adjusts.

However, patients should not increase the dose more quickly when they are still experiencing significant symptoms or are unable to eat or drink adequately.

When Should You Contact a Doctor?

Contact a doctor or clinic if you experience:

  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Difficulty eating
  • Difficulty drinking enough fluid
  • Reduced urination
  • Severe constipation
  • Increasing abdominal pain
  • Unusual dizziness or weakness
  • Repeated symptoms of low blood glucose, particularly when using certain diabetes medicines

Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and may affect kidney function.

When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Care?

Seek urgent medical assessment if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Abdominal pain radiating to the back
  • Upper-right abdominal pain with fever or jaundice
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face or tongue
  • Vomiting severe enough to prevent fluid intake
  • Loss of consciousness, seizures or severe hypoglycaemia

Do not wait for severe symptoms to resolve on their own.

Who Should Speak to a Doctor Before Using Mounjaro?

People with certain medical conditions, those taking multiple medicines, and those who are pregnant or planning pregnancy should discuss their health history with a doctor before beginning Mounjaro.

Tell your doctor if you:

  • Have previously experienced an allergic reaction to tirzepatide or its ingredients
  • Have a history of pancreatitis
  • Have gallstones or gallbladder disease
  • Have severe delayed gastric emptying
  • Have kidney disease or a high risk of dehydration
  • Use insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Have diabetic retinopathy
  • Are pregnant or planning pregnancy
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Are preparing for surgery, endoscopy or anaesthesia

Mounjaro should not be combined with another tirzepatide product or another incretin-based medicine unless specifically directed by a doctor.

Can Weight Come Back After Stopping Mounjaro?

Weight regain can occur after tirzepatide is discontinued, particularly when there is no long-term weight-management strategy in place.

In SURMOUNT-4, participants who switched from tirzepatide to placebo after an initial treatment period regained an average of approximately 14.0% of body weight during the following 52 weeks.

Participants who continued tirzepatide lost an additional average of approximately 5.5%.

These are study averages.

They do not mean that everyone will regain the same amount of weight, nor do they mean that every patient must remain on treatment indefinitely.

Before reducing or stopping treatment, a longer-term plan should address:

  • Sustainable eating habits
  • Adequate protein
  • Resistance training
  • Physical activity
  • Sleep
  • Stress management
  • Weight and waist monitoring
  • Alternative treatment options when appropriate

How Is Mounjaro Different From Wegovy and Ozempic?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, while Wegovy and Ozempic contain semaglutide. They are not the same medicine and should not be treated as interchangeable products.

ProductActive ingredientMain receptor activity
MounjaroTirzepatideGIP + GLP-1
WegovySemaglutideGLP-1
OzempicSemaglutideGLP-1
SaxendaLiraglutideGLP-1

Treatment should not be chosen simply because one medicine is described as “stronger” or because one trial reported a larger percentage of weight loss.

Approved indications, dose schedules, medical history, tolerability and individual treatment goals all matter.

Is Mounjaro Good for Weight Loss?

Mounjaro may be an appropriate treatment option for some eligible patients, but whether it is suitable depends on the balance of benefits, risks, side effects, cost and long-term treatment goals.

Before starting treatment, consider five key questions:

  1. Is there an appropriate medical indication?
  2. Are there medical conditions or medicines that require additional caution?
  3. Can side effects and follow-up be managed appropriately?
  4. Is there a plan for nutrition, protein intake and muscle preservation?
  5. Is the overall treatment plan financially and practically sustainable?

The goal should not simply be to lose weight as quickly as possible.

A suitable plan should support weight reduction while maintaining overall health and long-term sustainability.

Why Should You Avoid Buying Mounjaro From Unverified Sources?

Mounjaro should be obtained through a healthcare setting or authorised supply channel where the source, product registration, packaging and storage conditions can be checked.

Injectable medicines require appropriate temperature control during transportation and storage.

A photograph of a box or injection pen posted online does not confirm that the product has been stored correctly throughout the supply chain.

Before receiving Mounjaro, check:

  • Product name
  • Tirzepatide active ingredient
  • Prescribed strength
  • Drug registration information
  • Expiry date
  • Packaging condition
  • Product source
  • Storage instructions

Frequently Asked Questions About Mounjaro

How Often Is Mounjaro Injected?

Mounjaro is injected under the skin once a week according to the treatment plan prescribed by a doctor.

Patients should not increase the frequency or dose independently.

Where Is Mounjaro Injected?

Mounjaro is administered as a subcutaneous injection, commonly in the abdomen, thigh or upper-arm area according to the instructions for the product supplied.

Do You Have to Take Mounjaro for Life?

There is no single treatment duration that applies to everyone.

Duration depends on health goals, treatment response, side effects and the long-term weight-management plan.

Does a Higher Mounjaro Dose Mean More Weight Loss?

Not necessarily.

Clinical trials have reported different average outcomes across dose groups, but higher doses may also affect tolerability and are not automatically suitable for every patient.

Is Having No Appetite on Mounjaro a Good Sign?

Not always.

If a person is unable to consume enough food, protein or fluids, nutritional status and muscle mass may be affected.

Very low food intake or persistent gastrointestinal symptoms should be discussed with a doctor.

Do You Still Need to Exercise While Using Mounjaro?

Physical activity remains important for overall health and long-term weight management.

Resistance training may be particularly useful for supporting muscle preservation during weight loss when medically appropriate.

Can You Use Mounjaro if You Do Not Have Diabetes?

It may be considered for eligible patients who meet weight-management criteria.

Not having diabetes does not mean Mounjaro can be started without medical assessment.

Can You Restart the Same Dose After Stopping Mounjaro for Several Weeks?

Do not restart a previous dose independently after an extended treatment interruption.

A doctor should review how long treatment was stopped, the previous dose, treatment response and past side effects before deciding how to restart.
