What is HIFU, and how does it work?
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. In cosmetic treatment, focused sound energy heats small areas beneath the skin to stimulate collagen remodeling. This may gradually improve mild skin laxity without surgical incisions.
The treatment depth depends on the device and cartridge, as well as the area being treated. A cartridge marked 4.5 mm does not mean it reaches the SMAS, a fibromuscular support network beneath the facial skin, in every face. Deeper treatment is not automatically better or safer.
Are HIFU, Ultraformer III and Ultherapy the same?
HIFU is a technology term, rather than one machine. The exact device matters when comparing treatments.
| Term or device | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HIFU | A broad term for focused-ultrasound technology | Ask which manufacturer, model and cartridge the clinic will use. |
| Ultraformer III | Uses micro- and macro-focused ultrasound with different cartridges | Information about Ultraformer MPT or another model does not automatically apply to III. |
| Ultherapy PRIME | Uses microfocused ultrasound with real-time imaging, often called MFU-V | Imaging helps assess tissue and contact. The depth visible on screen is different from the depth at which energy is delivered. |
RF treatments, such as Thermage, use radiofrequency energy rather than ultrasound. Neither the brand name nor the treatment depth alone tells you which option suits your concern. Overseas clearance also does not establish a device’s registration or permitted uses in Thailand.
Who may benefit, and which areas can be treated?
HIFU may suit adults with a small amount of loose skin who want a modest improvement. Suitability depends on an examination, rather than turning 25, 35 or 50. Marked sagging or excess skin may need another approach, and HIFU does not reproduce a surgical facelift.
| Concern or area | What to know |
|---|---|
| Jawline, under-chin skin and neck | Selected ultrasound treatments may improve laxity. Loose skin, fat and loss of facial volume need different assessments. |
| Brow or eye area | Brow lifting is not the same as treating eye bags or eyelids. The Ultherapy PRIME instructions warn against treatment on the eyes, eyelids or within the orbital rim. |
| Arms, abdomen or other body areas | Suitability and intended use are device- and cartridge-specific. Facial treatment evidence cannot simply be applied to every body area. |
Skin tightening is not automatically fat reduction. If you have a double chin, hollow cheeks or deep facial folds, ask what is causing the concern before choosing treatment. More fat loss is not always desirable.
When will results appear, and how long do they last?
Changes usually develop gradually over several weeks to months. Any immediate feeling of tightness does not show the final result. Standardized before-and-after photographs and a follow-up assessment are more useful than judging the outcome on the treatment day.
Results are not permanent, and there is no reliable single duration for every HIFU device or person. Some studies have followed selected patients for up to a year, but that does not guarantee a year of benefit for you or establish the same outcome for other machines.
The number of sessions and timing of repeat treatment should follow reassessment. An age-based schedule or a promise of “one treatment every year” is not suitable for everyone.
Does HIFU hurt, and is there downtime?
You may feel heat, tingling or sharp discomfort during treatment. Pain varies by the device, treatment area and individual, so discuss pain control before starting.
Many people return to usual activities soon afterward, but redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising can affect your plans. Allow some flexibility around important work or social events rather than relying on a no-downtime promise.
What are the risks and warning signs?
HIFU is not risk-free, even with an authentic device and an experienced practitioner. Burns, scarring, altered sensation and muscle weakness can occur. Unwanted fat or volume loss and pigment changes have also been reported after microfocused ultrasound; these reports do not establish how often they happen.
| After treatment | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mild redness, swelling or tenderness | Follow the aftercare instructions and contact the clinic if symptoms worsen or do not settle as expected. |
| Blisters, severe or worsening pain, skin discoloration, persistent numbness or new facial weakness | Seek prompt medical assessment. Do not assume these symptoms mean collagen is forming. |
| Blurred vision or another change in vision | Seek immediate medical assessment. |
Who needs extra caution or should postpone treatment?
The practitioner should check the instructions for the exact device. For example, Ultherapy PRIME has contraindications involving open wounds, severe acne and certain implanted devices or metal. Its safety has not been evaluated in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Tell the doctor about skin disease, healing problems, diabetes, bleeding disorders, medicines and previous procedures. Mention pacemakers, other implants and their locations. Do not stop prescribed medicine, including blood thinners, on your own.
How should you prepare and care for your skin afterward?
- Have the treatment area assessed and agree on a realistic goal before booking.
- Use gentle skincare afterward and avoid rubbing irritated skin. Ask when to restart makeup, exfoliating acids or retinoids based on your skin’s condition.
- Protect your skin from sun exposure. If it is blistered or injured, get medical advice before applying products.
- Arrange a follow-up and keep the clinic’s contact details in case symptoms develop after you leave.
Drinking extra water does not guarantee more collagen or a better result. Follow your usual fluid advice, particularly if a medical condition limits how much you should drink.
Can HIFU be combined with Botox, filler, RF or other treatments?
Sometimes, but the sequence and spacing need an individual plan. Tell the practitioner about filler, botulinum toxin, threads, lasers and surgery in the same area. For example, the Ultherapy PRIME instructions do not recommend treating directly over dermal fillers.
There is no single waiting period that safely covers every product, device and treatment area. Avoid stacking procedures simply to speed up results, and have recent surgery or an unexpected reaction reviewed before another treatment.
How much does HIFU cost in Thailand?
Cost depends on the exact device, treatment area and plan. Before comparing offers, ask for a written quote in Thai baht and check whether it includes the consultation, cartridges, pain relief and follow-up.
A package advertised as “100 lines” cannot be judged by that number alone. Ask what a line or shot means for that device and which area it covers; the units are not automatically interchangeable across systems. More shots do not necessarily mean a better or safer result.
How do you choose a clinic?
- Check the clinic’s licence, the treating doctor’s identity and their experience with the proposed device.
- Ask for the exact model and verifiable device documentation. A logo or a low or high price alone does not prove authenticity.
- Expect a discussion of likely benefits, risks and alternatives, without guaranteed results from review photos.
- Confirm how consultation, consent and aftercare will be explained in a language you understand, and how to obtain help between visits.
