What can underarm laser hair removal help with?
Underarm laser hair removal aims to reduce hair growth over the long term. Light absorbed by pigment in the hair heats and damages the follicle. Hair that grows back may be finer and less dense, so you may need to shave less often. It does not guarantee that every hair will disappear permanently.
Reducing hair can also help with ingrown hairs and repeated irritation from shaving or plucking. However, it is not a guaranteed treatment for dark underarms, excessive sweating or body odour. A rash, inflamed bumps or a painful lump should be assessed before treatment.
Diode, Nd:YAG or IPL: what is the difference?
The right choice depends on your skin tone, hair colour and thickness, recent sun exposure and the clinician’s experience. Dark hair generally responds best. Blonde, red, grey or white hair responds poorly, and very fine hair may be difficult to treat. Darker skin needs careful device selection and assessment to reduce the risk of burns or pigment changes.
- Diode laser: a laser technology available in different devices and wavelengths. The applicator and the way the treatment is tailored matter as much as the device name.
- Long-pulsed Nd:YAG: a 1064 nm laser used for hair reduction. It is different from a diode laser and from Q-switched Nd:YAG treatments used for other skin concerns.
- IPL: intense pulsed light uses a range of wavelengths and is not a laser. It can reduce hair, but effectiveness and risk depend on the device, skin and hair. It is not accurate to call every IPL treatment inferior or more dangerous.
Primelase Excellence is a diode-laser platform. Its manufacturer lists a Blend applicator combining 810, 940 and 1060 nm, with contact cooling. This does not mean that every applicator suits every person or removes every hair colour. Before booking, confirm which device and applicator will be used for your underarms.
How much does underarm laser hair removal cost?
Smooth Clinic’s official price list currently lists underarm hair removal as:
- 1 session: 990 baht
- 5 sessions: 4,000 baht
Confirm the price, device, package validity and what is included before paying. A five-session package does not guarantee that five treatments will be enough for your desired result.
How many sessions will you need, and will hair grow back?
Treated hairs shed gradually over days to weeks rather than all falling out immediately. Several sessions are needed because hairs are at different stages of growth. The number and spacing of treatments should be adjusted to your hair, skin and response, rather than following a fixed schedule for everyone.
Regrowth is possible after a course, and maintenance treatments may be needed. Do not book increasingly frequent sessions to try to speed up the result; let the clinician assess when the next treatment is appropriate.
Does it hurt, and what are the risks?
You may feel heat or brief stinging, often described as a rubber-band snap. Cooling can improve comfort, but treatment is not guaranteed to be painless. Ask whether numbing is appropriate rather than applying an anaesthetic cream yourself before the appointment. Tell the practitioner immediately if the skin feels intensely hot or painful.
Temporary redness, swelling and tenderness can occur. Burns, blisters, darker or lighter patches, infection and scarring are possible; some pigment changes can last. Choose a qualified practitioner experienced with your skin tone, and wear the protective eyewear provided throughout treatment.
How should you prepare?
- Avoid tanning and tell the clinic about recent sunburn or a tan, including sunless tanning products. Treatment may need to be postponed.
- Avoid waxing, plucking or epilating before and between sessions as directed. Ask when to shave before your appointment, and avoid cutting or irritating the skin.
- Tell the clinician about medicines, skin products, a tendency to scar and any current underarm skin problems. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own.
- Avoid scrubs and irritating exfoliants around treatment according to your clinician’s instructions. Arrive with clean underarms, without deodorant, perfume or other product residue.
How should you care for your underarms afterwards?
- Use a cool compress for mild discomfort. Do not apply ice directly to the skin or start medicated creams without advice.
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, rubbing and irritating products while the skin is recovering. Ask when you can restart deodorant and your usual products; wait longer if they sting.
- Let treated hairs shed naturally. Do not pick, pluck or wax. Shave between sessions only once the skin has recovered and your practitioner says it is suitable.
- Protect the treated area from sun exposure, especially when wearing sleeveless clothing, and follow the aftercare and follow-up instructions given to you.
Contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, blisters, broken or weeping skin, spreading redness or marked colour changes. Do not wait until your next laser session to have these checked.
